Before getting hold of this book I thought it was a survey of the pros and cons of the various Chinese dictionaries available. It’s not. It is a discussion of the language from a lexical point of view. Or of Chinese “lexis”.
Aside from an analysis of Chinese words themselves, this book serves as a fantastic collection of lists of vocabulary, which can be learnt together in sets, aiding memory.
As with many Chinese books of this nature, it may be necessary to annotate it yourself, noting whether any given word is still used in China, especially the area you are in or are planning to travel to.
For a less comprehensive vocabulary guide, but much cheaper if you can find it, is An Introduction to Modern Chinese Vocabulary, published by Sinolinghua, Beijing.

Here’s a picture of the three of us, taken by our friend Marco. It was at Swensen’s (Novena), in Singapore.
We’ve now returned, and are settling back into work for at least twelve months before we travel overseas again.
I hope to progressively post more pictures of our holiday here as time enables.

Here’s Asher having some roti prata here in Singapore. He now eats the curry that comes with it as well!
Of course I’ve just noticed the photo is too big for the page. I’ll have to sort out my image resizing on our return to Melbourne.
Currently we’re in Japan, enjoying it immensely. We’ll be in Kyoto tonight and tomorrow night, then Tokyo for a night then Nagoya and home again via Singapore for a few days.
As soon as I’m not keeping Ying and Asher waiting upstairs in the hotel room I’ll post a few photos on here and write a decent post.

Ying gets lots of kisses from Asher. He’s settled into Singapore well, and we look forward to travelling to Nagoya tomorrow to see old friends.
Hopefully while we’re travelling we’ll continue to have opportunities to keep this site updated.
Well, we’re back in Singapore again before heading off to Japan.
Asher has a bit of a rash and lack of appetite, and vomited in the car on the way from the airport. We took him to the doctor this morning who said it’s nothing serious. We really hope he’s fully recovered before our trip to Japan in just under a week now.
Bishan, where we are staying in Singapore, has a new library.
This morning we got a small MP3 player for $18 (Singapore Dollars - roughly the same as AUD). From Cash Converters! Seems to work well, of course it’s second hand. No headphones, but as I type I’m able to play it through the computer here.
We missed Church on Sunday because we got in too late on Saturday night, not to mention Asher’s ailment/s as described above. We have a Church here in Singapore we really enjoy going to. They are Reformed Baptists, like us. Hopefully we’ll make it there soon.
