There goes a foreigner

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Last night I was walking along and a child who was sitting with - presumably - its parents yelled out “老外”, which means “old foreigner”. The parents, rather than scolding the child for using abusive language on the street, looked over to me to see how I would react. 误人子弟

The other day, I was walking along within university campus grounds. I heard a whistle, like someone was trying to attract my attention - must be important - I was greeted by a male student, walking with a group of friends, who yelled “hello” at me.

I went out for dinner with some friends the other night. Within the space of less than a minute, two groups walked past me saying “hello” and “hello hello hello hello” in low tones.

I hardly ever buy something at a shop without other customers asking the person behind the counter where I am from and why I can speak a bit of Chinese. The shopkeeper usually obliges them and tells them everything they know about me, in my presence.

Recently I went on a weekend-long excursion, hosted by a number of universities, for “foreign” teachers (a collective term which simply wouldn’t be used in Australia). Some of the Chinese university staff, who, one would assume, specialised in liaising with “foreigners” as a skill, referred to us as “老外” among themselves. So much for any special skills when it comes to liaison.

There are worse, but I’m just making this post public at the airport. I’ll add one or two stories to this post soon.

mmmm!! yummy!

But so many of these Taiwanese actors look and sound the same as each other. Compare this with some of the guys on 天才冲冲冲 (天才衝衝衝) and you’ll see what I mean.

Last night I ate Pakistani food. It was a real relief and a pleasant change.

The photo above is blurry, which suits the whole rough and woolly image of this website. Totally hardcore and underground. Whoa!! It’s got panache baby!!

The Japanese really know how to enjoy themselves. Wish I was there!

Finlandia - Sibelius

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Finlandia is a beautiful hymn. Or, maybe more accurately, hymn words have been written over the top of it.

Recently I have been consolidating some sentence patterns and a lot of vocabulary that I have learnt on this trip. I’ve got a box of 1000 blank cards which act as flashcards, and I write useful material on those. Also, there’s supermemo, which is memorisation software on the computer. Supermemo uses an algorithm which spaces out your flashcards in accordance with how well you know them based on your own response to a flashcard drill. Time isn’t wasted learning stuff you already know. The best time to be reminded of something is when you’re just about to forget it. Efficiency is very important when it comes to vocab learning because there’s simply so much vocab to learn. I look forward to getting back home to my more familiar computer where I can use supermemo in a far more satisfactory way. Recently I would have lost my whole data file due to a USB stick virus had it not been for a timely backup.

All the vegetablefood and fruitfood I want to eat now is durianfood. I’m not going to bother eating healthifood until I return back to Melbournefood where the whole idea is feasiblefood, viablefood and possiblefood.

The picture above is a piece of durianfood that I got the supermarketfood staff to cut straight out of its shell so that I could be assured of its freshnessfood. I brought it straight home and ate the whole piece immediatelifood.

Durianfood is so totally delicious. I want some every dayfood.

Glamrock filmclips

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Lately I’ve kept myself on the straight and narrow (and out of mischief) by listening to glamrock.

Here are filmclips for some of my favourites glamrock tunes of all time:

Slade - Mama we’re all crazy now

Gary Glitter - Leader of the Gang

The Sweet - Blockbuster

Wizzard/Roy Wood - I wish it could be Christmas every day (Ying & my shared favourite, because Asher was born near Christmas - high maintenance Christmas present).
